How Do I Stop My Hands from Shaking at Auditions?

Often people come to Committed Impulse because they want to handle an unwanted physical reaction that happens to them in auditions.

These physical reactions have included…

Sweating

Numbness

Shaking hands

Twitching legs

Dynamic farting (maybe I exaggerate)

Turning red in the face

Breaking out in a rash on the collar bone

Leg twitching

Light headedness

I am often asked for a technique to stop these unwanted seemingly coming-out-of-nowhere physical responses.

“I feel like my body is betraying me, and I can’t do my work.”

This ever happen to you?

I have no technique and I teach no relaxation tricks – for a very good reason.

Relaxation tricks and “techniques” usually make things worse.

And it’s usually the people that have learned some kind of stay-in-control-be-calm-at-whatever-cost technique that have the most problems.

Why?

Because those techniques battle with nature.

The nature that’s in your body.

Bottom line: the shaking hands, the turning red, the dynamic releases, etc., are the result of trying to control the natural increase in body energy and sensation that often arises when we audition or put ourselves further out into the world.

There’s a mighty energy in there and when it is caged up (with a technique or trick) because we don’t like how it feels, the result is shaking, turning red, and getting sweaty.

What to do?

Xanax, of course.

Noooo!

It’s a matter of that ol’ CI slogan: Ride It – Don’t Hide It.

Breathe deep when the energy rises, don’t try to stop or decrease that energy (unless you want to start shaking). And, as I’ve said before, that energy is a creative jet pack of fuel that is there to serve you.

I was watching surfers at Venice Beach yesterday. As the waves came in they masterfully rode that energy to shore.

But imagine what would happen if they stood there gripping the board in their arms, trying to battle the energy of the wave.

Would not be pretty, dude.

Same thing happens when we try to control the beautiful nature in our bodies.

Here’s your action challenge for this week.

When that wave of energy starts to swell, breathe deep, welcome it. And ride it.

Sure, it’ll take practicing this a few times.

But if you don’t fight the awesome energy in your body, all that shaking will shift into a beautiful flow.
