If you’re like me, you have to watch out for the ol’ over chattering mind.
We have to remember that there is a part of our mind that wants to keep us from stepping out into the world.
And, our mind has an effective way to keep us immobilized.
It’s a technique that always stops us in our tracks.
What is that fantastic technique?
Inviting us into a MENTAL DRAMA.
So, if you catch yourself glazing over as you stare at the ceiling while listening to how “You might just not be good enough…”
Well then there’s only one thing to do…
The Practice.
The Committed Impulse
4 access points
That bring you back from wearing mental drama pants.
STEP ONE:
As soon as you realize your mind pulled you into a crack-den of doubt, say out loud:
I’M BACK!
STEP TWO:
Actually SEE what is in front of you.
When we go into mental dramas we disconnect from our immediate environment.
Actively returning to what is real – meaning – what is actually around you – will pull you out of the swamp.
STEP THREE:
Take a deep BREATH.
Our breathing decreases when we are in our head – breathing will bring you back.
Hallelujah.
STEP FOUR:
Connect to whatever you feel in your BODY.
Typically we are triggered into a mental drama when we experience a body sensation we have
a low tolerance for. So, when you reconnect with your body – it may be intense – but it’s always
better than listening to how you suck.
PRACTICE THE PRACTICE. It changes everything in your life and art.
Cheat sheet:
I’M BACK
SEE
BREATHE
FEEL
Here’s a lil video from class about mental dramas, and what to do.
It’s short and sweet.
Now, we’d love to hear from you about how you’ve used THE PRACTICE to come back from a mental drama. If you’re new to THE PRACTICE and have questions – pop ‘em below as well.

Amen – I recently began stand up comedy and used so much of what you share Josh – breathing and saying in my mind “I’m back” works so powerfully with that rush of negative statements that rush into your mind when the Audience doesn’t laugh.
Josh Pais says
That’s awesome MC. It takes bravery to hang out when the laughs don’t come in. But, I’ll bet, the more you stay present, the shorter those gaps of silence will be.
Rock on!

Josh Pais says
M Rajib, you are so right – it does take practice. And, at the same time – every time you return to the present moment – YOU’RE FULLY BACK.
Have a beautiful day!

I’m still smiling from your Amazing ‘Venice’ workshop, Josh! (I miss you)…It has improved my life in such a short time, as in; how I take the “stage” or even walk into a room, and also, I’m now taking a ‘Cinematic workshop’ and instead of “acting all over the place” I can sit quietly in my character and just let it be…naturally!
I will definitely see you in October! I hope all is well in NYC and that you are scoring all the best parts and partners and that you are doing better than Ever.
Best always,
xoxo,
Mira Wilder
Josh Pais says
