On Sunday it was my father’s birthday.
An amazing man who was a Holocaust survivor (in hiding near Anne Frank), and went on to become a leading theoretical physicist working for 11 years with Albert Einstein. A great dad. I miss him.
As a kid, he explained to me, when I asked him what his job was, that he explored the building blocks of the universe. And then went on to explain that even my body was made out of atoms.
That tripped me out at 6 years old, believe me.
But that moment was the first seed of Committed Impulse. Part of the CI work is to experience the actual movements in our body without labeling them as good or bad. And those movements – at their core – are atoms moving about within our body.
We experience those movements as emotions.
Emotions are simply atoms vibrating at different frequencies within our bodies. That’s it.
Here’s how this applies to Committed Impulse…
Someone new to CI may report that they experience anxiety when performing. They also may report tightness in their body, followed by a mental drama. This kind of experience typically makes creating very challenging.
Yet, someone who has been training in CI, even for a little while, may experience a chaotic spinning movement in their chest. And not hold it as good or bad – but allow that internal movement to become creative fuel. This kind of approach to the same experience opens the creative channels.
That chaotic spinning movement is what many people actually experience in their bodies when they feel what they call anxiety.
Here’s the thing…
If you hold emotions as bad (and anxiety is considered to be a bad sensation in our culture) – then you will naturally try to stop that sensation as soon as it occurs.
Next, you will disconnect from your body (to not feel it – because it’s “bad”) and then end up connecting up with a mental drama.
Ever notice that?
But if you hang out with that sensation – without labeling it as a “bad sensation” but actually experience the physical dynamic of the sensation – then you are on your way to becoming creatively invincible.
Emotions are atoms vibrating at different frequencies in our bodies.
I strongly suggest you play with this truth. It is a radical game-changer.
Bottom line – we’re going to vibrate no matter what – might as well party with it. By “party,” I mean hang out with that emotion/movement. Explore it, welcome it – and let it be fuel to create with. Welcome it to your party, dude.
There are no bad emotions. It’s a radical notion, I know – but I’ve witnessed a major shift in the tens of thousands of people I’ve worked with at the Committed Impulse Laboratory.
My pops always wanted me to be a scientist – and maybe in my own way, I am.
My friend…
Breathe deep – stay in your body – see what’s around you – and say “I’m Back,” if you catch yourself in a mental drama.
Have a beautiful day!
